I recently purchased a Maytag twin. It seems to be in good shape - I completely dismantled it to check it over then put it all back together. After I put it back together and put a little gas/oil in, it didn't want to start. I have replaced the old spark plugs, checked the contact point for proper gap, cleaned the inside of the flywheel and magnets on the magneto, inspected the plug wires, and tested it per the instructions found in the owners manual. Still no luck. The guy that I bought it from said that it had spark when he tried it and I have no reason not to believe him. I admit that I am a novice at this and may be missing something obvious. Any suggestions?

Try cleaning the points with some contact cleaner. You should be able to find it at a parts house. Cleaning the points with a file, or emery cloth doesn't do a thorough job, and may make things worse. Is your condensor good? Try grounding out one plug wire, and see if the other one will fire.

I will get some contact cleaner and try that. I cleaned the points with some steel wool and a little CLR. How do I check to see if the condenser is good? I saw another post on this site about checking the coil with a 6 volt lantern battery. Should I try that too? And if so, how do you do that? I tried grounding one wire and checking the other plug for spark for both plugs with no luck. Could something have been knocked out of alignment when I dismantled it? I had no problems taking it apart so I don't feel I really jarred anything. I am enjoying learning about my engine and discovering things on my own, but certainly appreciate any expertise.

Hi, Hope you got your maytag model 72 to run. But if not try this. Look at routing of wires from coil to points and condensor. Also the point gap, should be .020. On a 72 a bought a few years ago someone had grounded out the wire from the coil in a half hearted attempt to restore it. After I routed it correctly, it had a very hot spark and runs good. Normaly I have not had problems with condensors or coils going bad unless the motor was left to the elements for an extended period of time by which a coil can become weak and the conedensor go bad. A simple test for a bad condensor is to disconect same, If it now has spark then the condensor is bad it should be replaced. Do not run this way as the points will burn fast. The 72's do seem to start easier with one plug grounded. This is pobably due to a little more juice going to the one spark plug. Hope this helps if you haven't allready solved the problem.
