I am look for some help on an old Wisconsin eng. The tag is gone. There are some casting numbers in the block. BA-54, L196,BX. It has a Fairbanks magento on it. The only #'s that I can read are:
CW Type 5, FM XB1B7R1 & s/n 4880962. This eng is off of a grain auger and I am trying to get it running. I has a weak spark.
Any help would be greatly apprecited.
Thanks Doug

Doug, My mistake ! All Wisconsin blocks start with AA prefix ! AB Prefix = cylinder head components and BA = crankcase assemblies.

Doug, Another way to tell model is to feel under head with your finger or roll engine over on it's side, There should be a cast or stamped number on the bottom side of the head along the longest sides ! Or it may be easier to remove head ! It should read something like AB-78-J or AB-76-E. These are just examples. BA-54 is a Wisconsin block number that's for sure, but in the older parts books they didn't list blocks sometimes but listed everything else. I will keep looking through my books and email me when you find the head number. Brad

I couldn't find anything in my parts books it probably is an obsolete model. You might be able to get information from local dealer or call Wisc Factory at 1-800-932-2858, I used to talk to Elmer Solner, I don't know if he still is there. Good Luck
Steve

I have quite a few Wisc parts books. How many cyclinders and are plugs out in open or covered over with tin work?

This eng is a vertical single cylinder. Looks alot like an oversized Kohler.

Doug -

My AENL, ACN/BKN, & ABN/AKN don't mention that model magneto. Those are the most likely candidates. But the mags are all similar. First, clean the points & adjust the gap (should be .015"). After that, check spark plug & wire. If those don't help, replace the condenser. I can send you scans of similar setups on other Wisconsin's if you need. As to the id of your motor, look at the carb for the number, that should help. If you end up taking the head off, the number cast into it is almost always a positve id. If I can find my AEN book, I will check it too. Does the cylinder unbolt from the crank case (probably not given the serial number). Is the spark plug vertical or almost horizontal?

Good luck, e-mail me if you need more help.

David
