I have a IHC 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hp LB engine, but the magneto don't spark. all parts seem to be fine. I replaced the condenser with a new one. the points are oke, but the coil has some fine cracks in the surface. this engine has been sitting outside for 30 years or more with a broken cover on the magneto. I suspect the coil is the culprit but I don't know how to test it?.
When I first cleaned the magneto it sparked just fine . but the spark got weaker and weaker after a couple of rotations.

Any info is apriciated, also where to find parts if needed for the magneto is welcome

Thanks

Hi Guy!
Ive got an LB engine with a bad coil too so I got impatient so I took the coil out and used a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower coil and put in place of the original and used a small shim and hooked the wire to the original one and fired right up!! Im getting ready to sell mine as it runs great after also making my own rocker arms too. Everything on it is original except the coil and rocker arms

Thanks for your comments Bill , But rust is not the problem as I took the whole magneto apart to inspect and clean it. It is all in near perfect condition. What I need to know is, is how to test the coil.

this engine has serial # LBA 70354. in what year does that put it.

The rotor and magnets may have rust on them and after turning a few times the rust fouled the magnetic field. Also swipe some sand paper thru the points and then drag some clean tablet paper thru them, this fixes 60% of the mags I get in for repair. Bill
