All,

An Uncle of mine is looking to buy what he has been told is a v-4 engine, made by Ford, and removed from a hydroseeder. He wants to use the engine on a stationary sawmill.

Anyone ever heard of this engine?
If so, where can one get parts?
Were they good engines?

Thanks for any and all assistance,
Tommy Duvall
Dalton, Ga.

Tommy, I have seen them and worked on them also. they look like a ford ranger pick-up 2.8 v-6 engine, short 2 cylinders. they take the same bellhousing and flywheel as the 2.8 v-6. they also take the same rod and main bearings. If this one has a pully mounted on the rear, it would work on the saw. you cant run much off the front pully, as it is not the crank shaft pully. the crank shaft dosn't come through the front cover. the pully there is on a balance shaft. it is only good to run the fan and alt. if much pressure is put on it, like running a saw, the 2 cam shaft type bushings won't last long, neither will the shaft. a new shaft is $250.00 and hard to find. Myself I would rather have a V/4 wisconson.

How could u tell by looking at an engine if it is a V4 or V6? What is it called the thing that shows you that?

what does this engine look like, back in the 60's & 70's Ford in England made 1700 & 2000cc V4's & 2500 & 3000cc V6's, some may have been used for industrial uses.
they are ok, best use was V6 marine engines.
there were a few German V4 & V6 engines, most common was the 2.8

The engine was used in 60's and 70's Saab cars. It was used in the Saab 96 and Saab Sonett. There are many part houses that still supply parts and advice on these engines. I just rebuilt one and they are really good workhorses, but very simple to work on. V4, solid lifters, pushrods, nice sturdy design. There is also many carburator options available.

Yes I have one in my Saab. I'm looking for parts for one now. Can you tell us where you've seen parts houses that carry parts for these? I'm having trouble finding parts.
