International C200 engin....how to check bearings?

I have a International I-544. The engin make a mechanical banging sound as it turn over. This sound is gone when I remove the spark plug in the #1 cylinder. I modifed a old plug and the piston is not hitting the plug. I pulled the oil pan off and I could not see any loose bearings or rods.

My question is how do you check for a loose bearing or rod/pistion connection. I have worked on engins before, but nothing this detailed.

Don, I don't know about an IH 544, but if it has split bearing caps its a standard procedure. I sent this to you on the 12th but never seen it come up on the fourm.
First thing you do is run to the parts house and get some plastigauge and spray carb. cleaner. Then take the suspected rod cap off. Pay attention to ber. locks, they always go together on the same side of crank. Push the piston and rod up away from the crank
about 1/4 or 1/2 inch. try not to let the bearings fall out. If they do clean them well. NO sand or grit & don't rub on the ber. surface. After cleaning let them dry. the crank and ber. have to be clean and oil free. The oil or cleaner will dissovle the plastigauge. The plastigauge comes in different sizes;its color coded. Get RED and GREEN: one stick of each should be plenty unless the wind is blowing really hard . its only 1.50 to 2.50 a stick depending on what parts house you go to. Autopuke is fine [AZ] as they don't make it. Tear off a piece paper and gauge about as long as the ber. is wide. Take the gauge out [with dry not oily fingers.] Place it in the ber. cap cross ways.Put the ber. cap on the rod and torque to engine specs. CAUTION: don't roll the engine over with the gauge in place As it will damage the ber. and possibly the crank. Loosen the cap and remove. use the piece of envolpe you tore off to compare to the gauge. the width of the gauge will show you how much oil clearance you have. Some spec. books show oil clearances to be any where from .0005 to .003 thousandths of an inch. Any thing less than .0015 is to tight. After building automotive and truck engins for thirty four years i always go for .0015 to .002.and never had a problem. If you have any trouble send me an email at klj@intu.net . Good luck lloyd
