I've got a 1926 2hp Stover KA Hit & Miss. It's rough getting it to start, but when running it seems pretty decent. The question I have is, the darn thing runs best with the magneto advance/retard lever in the "RETARDED" position! Any suggestions as to what would cause this condition? I've timed and re-timed 3 times thinking my trammed timing marks were way off but found out each time I was only a few degrees off. Thanks, Mike

Magneto trip spring is weak. With the advance/retard lever in the retarded position, the spring gets compressed more, and snaps the magneto a little harder. The magneto needs to snap fairly hard, to give a hot spark. You can either replace the spring, or take the old spring and stretch it a little. Replacing it is probably the best solution. You can get new springs from Starbolt.
