I have 4 Maytags. 2 twin cylinder and 2 single cylinders, both around 1937. I can get both twins to run fine and one of the singles. The other one will not. It has good spark, I cleaned the tank and the carb, installed new gaskets. Has good compression, maybe even more so that the running one. Mixed up fresh gas and oil. New plug. I even swapped the carb suction tube with the running one and got nothing. Sometimes it will fire just once and then no more even tho I get spark using a spark checker that is in line to the plug. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks

There is also a check ball in the bottom of the tube going into the gas tank I believe. Make sure it is free.

Sounds like it isn't getting fuel. Is the fuel needle adjusted properly? Are the intake and exhaust ports plugged up with carbon? Screw out the spark plug, and pour in just a little gas/oil mixture. About half a thimble full. Screw the spark plug back in, and see if it will hit a few times, when you kickstart it. If so, the problem is definitely fuel.

Thanks, I'll check what I can. To check/clean the intake, don't I have to take the cylinder/head off from the crankcase?

Yes, you have to remove the cylinder to clean the ports. Cleaning the ports was part of the regular maintenance on an old Maytag engine, since carbon would eventually plug up the ports.
