Aloha, I used to see the operator starting a small gas engine to turn the diesel engine before starting. My question is what exactly does turning the diesel engine do. Build up pressure, heat up the cylinder? TIA

The small engine is the starter; that is, it serves the same purpose as the starter-motor of your car. Additionally, as Caterpillar equipment was built for heavy-duty service in sometimes extreme conditions, the shortcomings of battery-electric starters were overcome (as long as the small engine has gasoline, it will continue to crank the Diesel engine over). the ability to crank for extended periods helps in removing air from the Diesel fuel-injection system if the machine is run out of fuel. Additionally, in extreme cold, extended cranking of the diesel engine served to get the oil circulating and, as the small engine shared coolant with the Diesel engine and the exhaust of the starting engine passed through a coolant-jacketed manifold, the Diesel engine could be warmed to the point it could be relied on to run at practically any cold temperatures encountered.

Aloha Randy, thank for the reply and detailed explanation. I didn't think about the battery and yes, it didn't need it for running the engine except for lights, etc. Those were the good old days. I remember the operator parking the tractor on a slight incline to kick start it, so to speak, in the morning.
