I have a Ford 340 Skid Steer loader with a Wisconsin VH4D engine, specification 207366, Serial Number 3539596, 3 1/4 x 3 1/4.

The engine runs well but is weak. A compression check shows 40, 100, 100, 100. I am looking for options and am considering a rebuild. I ordered the VH4D book, WM20249, from Wisconsin Motors which came today. I am a little disappointed in the content of the book and was hoping for a LOT more detail before attempting a rebuild.

Does anybody know another good rebuild manual for the Wisconsin Engine I have? What other engine options should I consider? I've been thinking about some alternatives like a small air-cooled diesel or a Kawasaki air-cooled from a ultra-light! What do you guys think?

Hello, I'm in the process of rebuilding a VH4D also. So far it has been very easy. The biggest problem was removel of the flywheel off the tapered shaft. It does not come off as easy as they say in the book. I also agree that the new manuals leave a lot to be desired. I found on Ebay several older Vh4d manual. These show a lot more details. They come up all the time. Also on parts I have found the factory to be excellent on parts, delivery and answering questions. Hope this helps. Joe

The Wisconsin air cooled V-4's are very simple as compared to a typical 30 HP gasoline or diesel water cooled engine. I've rebuilt a lot of engines, and the Wisconsin is by far the least complex. They have less than half of the number of parts than other types. This is why the manual is so small. It's to the point, with no added BS.

Getting back to your engine. From the compression readings, it looks like you have one cylinder with lower compression. Could be something fairly minor like a burned valve or a leaking head gasket. If the engine is "tired", i.e. low power, high oil consumption, making bad noises, etc., it probably should be taken apart and inspected. All parts are available from Wisconsin, and your machine shop can get aftermarket parts. The overhaul cost will depend on the condition, but will be comparable to other engines. Expect up to $200 per cylinder if it's in real bad shape.
