I have a OLD military generator set (10K) that has a Wisconsin (air cooled) V4 engine. Im still trying to read the engine model number, but no luck so far. One of the numbers, I think says 3 7/16 X 4.
The gen set was made by Condec. They are out of business. This engine was running fine untill yesterday. A bang sound happened and then a metel to metel knock. I removed the left head today and found that the valves on that side was not moving any more (pistons look and work fine). When I crank the engine (by hand), It looks like something is hitting one of the valves. First, any idea what engine this is? Second, Any ideas what is wrong? I know it must be something with the cam, but how is the cam driven? Third, Is this thing worth fixing? I don't want to spend large sums of money to repair this engine. Because this is a very heavy engine, I'm hoping I repair it (cheaply) without removing the pan. Am I wishing for too much?
If anyone has a manual on this engine, could you let me know the part number of the manual or send me a email on how to get one. If you know anything about this engine, I would like to hear from you.
Thanks
Bob

can not read most of the numbers

The 3-7/16 x 4 would indicate bore and stroke but the 3-7/16 throws me. I know some of the v-4s had 3" bores and some had 3-1/2" bores. But if it is indeed a 4" stroke it would have to be a VG4D as they were the only flathead engines to have a 4 in. bore. The biger V460,461,and 465 had the 4 in. bore but they are overhead valve engines. E-mail me if i can be of any more help.

Hello Bob, Yes I believe the engine is worth fixing. You need to call the Wisconsin Factory @ 800-922-5632. ext 6. Ask for Hike. He can "ID" the engine for you. They are very easy to work on. I would get a service manual off Ebay as the older ones are much better then the new ones. The cam is gear driven. I'm in the process of rebuilding two and have found cost to be about $600 with Valve Grinding, Rod bearings, Grinding the Crank, Rings, and gasket set. Hope this helps. Joe Browning

I have seen these motors break crankshafts and still run quietly for some time. The manner inwhich they break allows both to turn and run as if there is no problem. But what eventually happens is the crank will start osselating more and more and one of the rod caps will hit and break the camsaft. Thats when it stops running. Too check if that has happened rock the flywheel back and forth very slightly and isure that the other end follows with no hesatation.Working on theses motors is very simple but be sure and follow the manual closely and as Ben stated the older manuals are better, They cover more and go into more detail, Good luck and feel free to e-mail me if you have any Q,s.
