hook your engine up to an alternator, step up the voltage, rectify it, build a Cockcroft-Walton voltage multiplier, charge up some big capacitors and let loose on a 5 turn coil made of 1/2 inch thick copper and....

Ohhh heck click on the link.

just remember to make a big enough hole in the bottom of the can as it crushes so fast the the air inside is expelled at the same rate as a jet engine.

Have fun and be very careful

Simon

Hi Matthew,

I had a student that made one like a square hay balor chamber. used 4 x 4 tube as the chamber, used a gearbox/crankarm and plunger. had a small slot cut in the bottom of the chamber at the end of the stroke so that the can would not fall through until it was crushed. that was the easy part. designing and making the can feeder to automatically time and feed the cans into it took a few shafts and cams.

myself, i like the machine made from car tires mounted close together and turning. cans are dropped between the tires and are crushed from the side. very fast.

i guess the crank type would be more in place with a hit and miss engine.

by the way, the engines are a lot more interesting if they are driving some machinery. so i think you fellows should come up with ideas for engine shows. i,m still working on my first engine and icecream freezer combination.

Find a old pump jack andwhere the arms would connect to the pump would run the can smasher put a pipe under that to hold your can and slot it in the bottem so the smashed can falls threw. My brother and my brother in law both made one each one is different both have automatic feeds. sorry don't haave a picture of them. But it is a place to start or think about good luck. Chris
