Salsbury made two basic engines, motor scooter and industrial. Model 600 (these were 6 hp engines) industrial had four boltdown ears on the oilpan, rope or kick start depending on use. The number stamped in the case is the serial number. The most popular magneto was an FM J1B78. Depending on intended use crank was straight with a key way or stepped and threaded for a clutch.
Motor scooter engine had two high ears on front of oilpan and motor mount bracket on top of head. Kick start with stepped crank for clutch. Flywheel has magnets for light coil.
Write to Jerry Ellis, 10815 Edgewood Dr, Dublin, OH 43017 for information on the Int'l Salsbury Restorers Society. Salsbury made scooters from mid 30's to 1950. Most popular was the Model 85, 1946-50. Built in Los Angeles or Pamona Calif.

Frank,

I had an old Salsbury 600 Motor Scooter in Nebraska in 1964. A 600 engine with a Salsbury drive. My uncle thinks they were popular in California in the 50's. It was fast and had a boat tail rear body with the gas tank forming flip up trunk lid. It had a gas and brake pedal for the right foot, just like a car. Kick start was in front of the seat, like a Cushman.

Hope this helps.

I've searched for Salsbury and find Salsbury Scootabout in a report on scooters.

This sounds like a model 85 Salsbury. They were built in California In 1947, 48, 49. I owned one when they were new and have been looking for one to restore. At one time the factory was owned by the Northrup Aircraft Company.
