I am looking for some information as to what color to paint this engine (original). I seem to be able to find this engine in green/red/grey, which of these is correct?

Hello Jason,

The original color for a Cushman Cub is Gray. However, Cushman made engines for Sears that were sold under the "Farm Master" name and they were painted Red. They are identical engines with only the Tag and Color being different. You can tell which one you have by looking at the serial number tag to see what name it was given.

I have included a picture of one of my rides that is powered by a 4 hp Sears Farm Master. It is a 6-Speed WheelHorse Garden Tractor which has been modified. I call it my "Old Iron Retrieval Unit" and I ride it around at some of the shows.

Take Care.

Often a color change is an indication of mfg date, such as originally red, orange after certain date. Also engines were often painted to match application on commercial sales,so that they matched/contrasted with buyers equipment.I would make a note of serial number etc,and look for engines in same range for proper color.
