All,

I have been pulling my hair out trying to get some spark out of this recently rebuilt engine I purchased. It ran fine for a little while and suddenly would not crank.

I have replaced the points, condenser, plugs and plug wires. I have performed troubleshooting and have concluded that the magneto appears to be putting out some voltage.

The thing that troubles me is that the red wire that comes from the coil that connects to the points and condenser is showing connection to ground when tested with a multimeter. Since this engine uses shorting/grounding out to kill the engine, I believe this is causing the no spark condition I am seeing. Since I am new to this engine and this condition, I am not absolutely sure though. What do you all think? Is is possible that the coil/magneto is grounding itself out? What should/can I do about it if this is the case? How can I test to determine if this is the problem?

I'm about to send the front end loader and engine to the mechanic which will cost me a lot of money in towing and his charge for parts and labor. (about $500) Please help if this is something I can fix myself. Thanks in advance.

The primary side of the coil is only going to have .1 or .2 ohms. A multi meter will not show this, you need to use a digital meter for this. Secondary side should read between 10 and 50 ohms.

Check that there is nothing shorting at any screw terminal or points, and that the wires are 1/16 inch away from metal frame of points where they attach. Sometimes they poke through and touch ground.

Are points set right? Are the points you put in showing any sign of being burned? Even new boxes can hold used parts. File contacts, or stone them on a wetstone. Run a piece of paper bag between contacts to remove any traces of oil, grease or dirt after they have been gapped. Are they opening and closing as they should?

Look for wires or straps touching metal where they should not be touching.

Check to see that the condenser is not isolated from ground, such as being wrapped in tape to keep from falling out of holder and the center wire is not touching ground or forced over a sharp edge.

Make sure connection to points are sound.

Is the timing of the magneto to the engine correct?
