Hey guys/gals;

A guy down the road has a couple of mills in an old barn along with a hand thresher that he's willing to part with. One is a letz feed grinder (it has a side-fed wooden hopper/chute similar to those on the larger stand-alone corn shellers). I would like to know what the going price is on one of these Letz mills.

The other mill is very very similar to a meadows/williams mill, but it was actually made by the "American Corn Mill Co., Winston-Salem NC" and carries a patent date of Oct 9th, 1915. It has very similar red/black pinstripe paint job as the meadows mills and is all wood construction excepting for the usual parts. Interestingly, though, the grain chute that leads from the cleaner down to the feed auger is shaped like a dog-bone, and the dust blower fan sits away from the stone housing and is completely enclosed with wood, unlike the meadows and williams arrangements. Anybody ever seen one of these before or have any information on it? I have sent info to Meadows mills and they're workin on it from their end too. This is a new one on me!

Ive got an american mill 12 inch stones. hadit at a show and a guy stopped by and told me a good bit about it. I think that he was from Auburn University. He did a lotof research an grist mills. If the srones are 12 inches the mill is more valuable than a meadows mill. Price 3000 if in good shape. Sorry I did nog get the Guys phone no or address.

I wish I could get that American mill from him, but because it is rather large and heavy, I can't get it. I spoke with some guys at Meadows mills and they thought it would be worth up to $1000 in the "As-found" condition. The only number I could find on the mill was a number "18" stamped in the wood support between the stone housing and the belt pulley (pulley on the right hand side).

I'm going to try and get the Letz mill from him, but even that will be a stretch for me to restore, as I will have to do it in my kitchen. I don't have a garage or shed as i am renting a duplex in town. I may keep it on the back patio under a tarp and keep the wooden feed chute in the storage closet. A guy on another board looked at my pictures of it and beleives that it is a model 88 heavy duty grinder; one of the 40 series grinders with 8 or 10" burrs putting it as being manufactured somewhere between 1917 and 1919.

I'll have to find somebody good at welding cast iron or brazing, as a part of the burr housing is broken off where the two halves meet each other. I don't think it'll be too much of a problem since the part isn't load bearing and it's on the top of the housing. I'll just have to do a good job grinding and filing on it to get it to not stick out.

BTW, would you be able to email me some pics of your American Corn mill? I'm interested to see what some others look like. jeblloyd@hotmail.com
