I have a Maytag Model 92 engine that will run for about 2 or 3 minutes then die. What would cause this? I have tried adjusting the needle valve but that does not seem to help much? Is there some sort of filter or screen that could be cutting off the fuel supply? Any other info on these engines is always appreciated. Thanks!

You should be grateful--at least yours HAS a carb...! I just picked up a 92 (my first Maytag, though I've got lots of other rusty old junk...errr, valuable collector's items) without a carb at a garage sale for $2.00. Haven't had a chance to look it over real well, but it appears to be all there other than the carburetor. What's a good source for these? Alternately, are there any other "will-fit" carbs that would work? At this point I'm not worried so much about authenticity as functionality--don't want to blow the budget if it has other problems.

Tim, the carbs on these Maytags are very unique, unless your a machinist and can make an identical copy, I don't think there are any substitutes for a Maytag carb. I could be wrong though! There are numerous parts for Maytag offered on Ebay and swap meets and engine shows are always good sources for parts. You stole that motor for $2....why don't I ever find bargains like that! PS---Are you SURE the carb is not there? The carbs on the 92s are simply an aluminum casting with a lever on the botton (needle valve adjustment) and about a 3/4 hole in them. Many people think the carb is missing when it is really just so simple they Think it is missing. They came out with an air cleaner but a lot of them were taken off and lost...it goes over the hole in the carb and is held in place by a thumbscrew. Hope this helps to fire up another Maytag!

HappyKansan: Weeelll---like I said, I haven't really looked it over. There's certainly nothing that looks like an air cleaner, but like you say, those are optional... It appears to be stuck, the spark plug is broken off (but well above the threads), and it's missing a plate on the flywheel that looks like an access cover to the electricals. I just got it Sunday, and I've been busy working on the other toy I got at the same rummage sale--a 1949 Bolens Handi-hoe. It's got a B&S 1.1 HP NS on it, which I got running last night for the first time in living memory. The guy I got it from is cleaning out his Grandfather's barn after buying the property, and he can never remember it running--it's just sat there since he was a kid 30+ years ago, and probably longer than that. I'll look at the Maytag in the near future, and maybe come back with some more questions. Thanks for the help so far--like I said, Maytags are a new beastie for me!

Aloha, I usually take the carb apart and clean the insides with lacquer thinner or if you have some carb gunk, soak it in that for a couple of hours. A fast way would be to use carb cleaner that is sold in the aersol can. Take it apart and shoot all the passages with the cleaner and be sure to wear protective goggles because the spray may be deflected back to you. If there are any rubber o rings or gaskets, I would remove them before soaking in gunk or when using the carb spray.

Mahalo,
Howard

Would it be safe to use some carb cleaner that you mix with the gas? Thanks for your help!

Happy,I'm no Maytag expert, but it sounds to me that you need to clean the carb.Or maybe just the pick-up tube that goes into the tank.Be careful when you do this as not to drop the little "D"shaped disk.It is small and can be lost real easy.I take my carbs apart and clean them with mineral spirits then put them back togather and they usualy work fine.
