Ignitor basics - what's in that little box?

I have sort of a general question regarding the old ingitors: How do they work? I have some electronics background, so I should be able to digest whatever responses I get. The only three ways I can think of to generate current is by magnetics, crystals, or chemical (battery). Those little ignitor boxes don't look big enough to be a magneto, and they sure don't look like a battery, but would they have known about crystals then? I've not spent any time around one, or I probably would have taken one apart by now. Thanks for any info.

Mike

Here is a page that discusses what you seek, they also cover hot tubes, low and high tension mags, etc.
