Hello,

I've recently taken an interest in WItte diesels because I saw one at a show this year. I've been looking for a small stationary diesel for sometime now and would like to learn more about them. I've been looking for a used Lister but they seem tough to find in the states. I know you can import them new from India but I'm afraid I'll get burned somehow trying to do this. Has anyone here personally tried this? I'm going to use the engine to produce electricity while running on used vegetable oil. I'm interested in whether anyone knows what type of combustion chamber the Witte uses. Is it a pre-combustion type or is it direct injection? Would you guys consider the Witte to be the most popular of the small (under 15 HP) old low r.p.m diesels found here in the U.S.? What brand is? How about Fairbanks Morse? Any interesting info on the Witte brand or any old diesels, or where to purchase one, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you -Mark-

While it is possible to run diesels on vegetable oils for fuel, there are many problems associated with this process, typically heavy deposits in the cyclinder and valve areas, accelerated wear on the injection pump element through lack of lubricity in unrefined oil, the need to preheat and process/filter the oil before use and so on.

Listers and other engines have been run successfully on vegetable oils where the actual cost was so low that the additional expense of processing it made no big impact on the fuel costs. Note that the fuel consumption increases or the power goes down on vegetable fuels.

My personal view is that it is something that is fine for playing with but not for anything you want to depend upon.

We hope to be shipping a container of Lister diesel engines over to Chattanooga some time in the next 4 months to a collector, he may be looking for additional engines to help pay for the shipping, so let me know if you are interested.

Our web pages are on Oldengine.org, url in the box.

Hi, I know nothing about these engines, but on ebay there is someone up in Wash. state selling a shipment of ~7 hp. diesel engines (new) shipped over from India. They say they run on any form of oil. Search ebay for "diesel engine" and you should find them. They seem to be going for $6-800. Good luck.
