Any suggestions on removing this flywheel. The manual shows the use of a large babbit hammer but this seems like it would be awfully hard on the bearings. I only want to remove the flywheel so I can straighten some dents on the shroud and I don't want to risk doing any internal damage to the engine since I won't be tearing it down. There are no puller holes on the flywheel so it appears the "hammer to the end of the shaft" is the only method. It seems like you would have to beat the daylights out of it to get that taper to pop loose.

Hello,
These can be tough to get off. First soak it with a good oil for a couple of days. Then mount a very large wheel puller (Somehow). You might also drive a couple of wedges against the block and the flywheel. There are a couple of small area that will allow you to accomplish this. Take a very good strain on the puller. Next, get a very good large size hammer. Swear at it!!!! Next, give it a very, very, very, very good solid hit. (protect the shaft end with a piece of hardwood. You might need to up the strain on the puller, if it does not release on the first hit. Swear at it again!!! Give it another very good solid hit. It will come off. Hope this helps Joe

My book says to use a babbit hammer with pressure behind the flywheel. They can be tough for sure. Good luck.
