I have a wisconsin VH4D engine driving a Winco 10 KW generator (120/240 1ph at 1800 rpm) There is a diaphram gizmo mounted to the front of the engine fan shroud that appeared to be part of the engine speed control. There is a vacuum fitting in the intake runner with a hose that connected to the diaphram assembly. Any ideas as to what this unit was intended to do? Where did the pull rod from the diaphram connect? (Carb or the governor rod?) Any help is appreciated as this thing is not in my aftermarket manual. Thanks-Chuck.

From your description, it sounds like a "Choke Pull off", but was likely to have been added by the "generator manufacturer" in any case.

When engine starts choked, vaccuum in the induction system is high, and increases as engine speed increases. At a certain point, even with a cold engine, you can run the engine without much choke action.

The engine may have been set up to be just a "Pull and go" operation, but some of the other parts may not be there to make it fully functional, or the design and execution may have left a bit to be desired.
