I have an old monitor engine which was my grandfathers. He had it running, and then he died. Left no trace of how to run it. I think it has a small battery in it, and how does this battery become timed correctly. help, Marty

Marty,

Don't know if you are still out there and will get this but hey, it worth a try....

I just picked up a monitor engine last month !! I used a 6 volt battery to get it running. I also tried a 12 volt and it work very well. They originally came with a small dry cell battery that was thrown away when they went dead.

With that said, one post of the battery is grounded to the engine frame, the other to a "leaf spring". This "leaf spring" needs to be isolated from the mounting bracket. Next, there is a cam pinion gear right next to the gas tank on the flywheel side and it should have two contact pins on the face of it (180 deg opposite from each other). The "leaf spring" should come in contact with one of the posts at every compression stroke to complete the circuit.

try this link to Harry's old engines >Link
It>Link has good info. It also has a parts break down and drawing. It's not complete but it gives you a good idea.

I have replaced the spark plug as well and it helped a lot. Make sure it is clean and has good spark.

Let me know if you need any other info.

Gary
