What Baggsy says is correct, one part boiled linseed oil with one part mineral spirits or turpentine gives a nice coating. It can be touched up easily and looks great on old engines. I have a 4hp Waterloo Boy done this way. I can send pictures if you wish. I get lots of good comments.

Boiled Linseed oil cut with turpentine is an old favorite, what didn't you like about it? It has to be the boiled, which is a misnomer because it is warmed with drying agents, not truly boiled. If not cut with enough turp, even the boiled oil is slow drying. Clean it good first with kerosene and get all the old built up grease off. Other things I've heard of (but never tried) are WD-40, beewax, Danish Oil, and clearcoat. The clearcoat is said to yellow over time however. Let us know what you didn't like with the Linseed Oil and we'll go from there...
