I just got this very old Briggs And Stratton engine. It has ONE valve for the intake and exhaust, pushrod and spring are external.
the cylinder and head appear to be one piec
the carburator is gone so i dont know about that.
it is a horizontal shaft model with a built in reduction (looks to be about 15-1) instead of a keyed shaft sticking out it has a round flat plate that is about flush with crank case and it has 3 bolt holes in it. it is not a bolt on botttom block ,it has oil plug in bottom of oil pan. mounting place is on the SIDES of the block, like it was between a frame.
the fly wheel shroud is gone (maybe it never had one)
If you can help me identify it i would really appreciate it.

You most definitely have a Briggs model PB. I believe they were built until 1935. The PB evolved from the motor wheel engine. Your engine has 2 valves, not just one. The exhaust valve is the one you can see. The intake valve is located under the cone shaped housing directly above the exhaust valve. The intake valve is operated by atmospheric pressure and requires no pushrod or rocker arm. The power take-off reduction is actually the camshaft. The cam has four lobes to operate the exhaust valve and therfore runs at an 8 to 1 reduction off the crankshaft, I believe. Engines like yours were used on many mowers and garden tractors of the late 20's and early 30's. Email me if you have other questions. Good luck with your engine. Mike
