I have a Briggs model ZZ engine in a garden tractor, the only problem is I am constantly chasing the throttle as there is no governor. Did these ever have governors? This engine runs very well and I don't want to chance hurting it.

Bought a ZZP Special with a star in place of the (A) in special three weeks ago at an auction. In getting it running I found a crack in the oil pan. When I took the oil pan off to weld it I found the plunger from the govener gear in the bottom of the pan. YES THEY HAVE GOVENERS that is what the lever is for on the side of the block below the carb. Turns out mine is a military version. It had reminetts of the sealed/sheilded ignition wire which I have replaced with a new sheilded wire and sheilded XMD-15 spark plug.

would it be possible for this plunger to just fall out? or would it be due to wear or mis assembly? I know the previous owner of this engine had to first bolt the oil pan into the tractor chassis, then bolt the block to the pan as the pan wouldn't fit between the frame rails. Is ot possible it could have dropped ot then? Is there a way to avoid this?

The only way the plunger can fall from the governor gear is if the governor linkage is loose or miss adjusted.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe they did. I've got a 'Z' that has no compression, stuck valve or bad rings I'm thinking. But I hope someone else will chime in with the answer. Pretty cool old engine, aren't they?

Pull the cover from the valve spring chamber behind the carb. This will let you see if the valves are moving. If you have a stuck valve it it ore than likly is the exhaust.

try a wet compression test, add a few drops oil to cylinder, then perform compression test, if some compression returns, it is rings
