I just purchased a generator made by Hobart Brothers in Troy,Ohio. The plate says: unit ac gasoline, electric generating m5, 30 kva,125 volts 50/60 cycles. it was mfg. 1942, and has a Herculies ZXB 4 cylinder motor. Anyone know where I might find a book on it, or any info? Any idea what it could be worth in working condition? Thanks for any help, Kim

Hi Kim,

The M5 and M6 generators are WWII military units that were used to power a 37mm anti-aircraft gun control system. Their main power output was three phase, but they do have a single phase auxillary output. That little ZXB engine put out about 11 horsepower.

The technical manual for the generator set is "TM 9-616,Generating Units M5 and M6 (23 December 1943)". If you do a google search for 'TM 9-616' you will find quite a few sources for it.

Good Luck,
Scott

Kim, You might try Hobart Bros. Co., (still in Troy, OH) at 937-332-4000. They may not have the info, but someone there should know who might. My neighbor retired from the ground power division 2 years ago, but he's on vacation for a couple of weeks. Let us know if you find out anything!
