I have a 12 HP Cray and Son's that is Hopped cooled. It is built simular to a Waterloo Gas Engine. It has a Tag that says Cray and Sons Chicago Il. Pat. Date 1907. Do any one of you know any thing about this engine. I know it weight is 2,080 lbs. Who built this engine and was there many built. I have seen one 10 hp at Republic Mo. Show and a 6 hp that came out of a concrete mixer. It has a Brass Lukenhimer mixer and has an ignitor. Any Help would be appreciated. I have looked in the Gas Engine Books and have not seen the Cray and Sons mentioned. (older book) Thank you for the info in advance.

Do you have the serial no. and type. It would help if you could post or send a picture of it. I have a 12 HP John M Smyth which should be the same as your engine. Is the govener in the flywheel or a flyball?

I've found reference to Cray Brothers Co. Cleveland, Ohio. They were a large jobbing house that got their engines from Waterloo, Iowa. Quite possible the two companies were some how connected.

For this info. I have only seen a 10 and a 6 hp, and I own this 12 Hp. I can get it to fire once in 36 seconds when it is running. This might be a bit too slow. Thanks again for your information

The info I have lists Cray Bros. as making a 1 1/2, 2 1/2, 4 1/2, 6, 8, 12 hp engines. Some people strive to get a hit & miss engine run that slow. Is there a reason you would want it to run faster? As long as it stays running I don't see a problem.
