Spring is near and it's time to start thinking about some projects. My JD 1 1/2 hp Mdl. E has started leaking oil from behind the magneto. It really slings it out when it's running! The parts list shows a felt (?) oil seal for that area, is that what needs replacing? Anyone done that? Is it hard to get to? Anything I need to know before I start taking things apart (besides lining-up the timing marks)? Thanks!

I was told that you don't need to worry about timing it because it is just a generator not a mag. Also I have heard that they push oil out wherever they can because there is no breather. Unless it is new enough then it has one. I know guys have lengthed the oil fill plug with a short pipe and then adding a breather to the end so it doesn't push oil. Just mt 2 cent that I have heard.

The low tension mag on the "E"s is, infact, an AC generator. It MUST be timed, however, so that the instant the greatest current is produced by the mag, the ignitor trips. Even one tooth off will make starting hard, if not impossible. There is a procedure to time it, using the little spring-loaded pin in the mag. However, if it is working good now, I would LEAVE IT ALONE, or at least make my own marks with paint marker, or whatever, after cleaning the teeth so the paint will stick.

Trust me, if you get that mag out of time, you will not be a happy camper. (Been there, done that, got the tee shirt!)

Bob, Thanks for the info. Am I on thr right track to cure the oil leak? Repair Manual shows a felt washer behind the mag - is that what needs to be replaced? Thanks, Jogg

I can't help you with the leak, as my 3HP throws oil, too, and I've been told that is normal, at least to some degree. You might want to post your question at:

and while you're there, search the archives for Deere leaks.
