I just recieved a 3hp M, which was manufactured in 1919.. I have never dealt with one of these engines before, and was wondering as to the following..

1.) How do i prime the fuel pump??

2.) As to lubrication, how much oil, if any, should be in the crankcase...

3.) There is a breather at the back of the engine.. What is the ultimate purpose for this little wonder..

thanks for the help..

A little bit of oil should be in the crankcase to lubricate the timing gears but this oil gets pushed back from the cylinder by the piston.

Old pumps leak back unless the check valves are in exellent condition. I have and continue to prime the engine at the gas bowl on the carb. Once running, the pump moves fast enough to keep it filled.

Justin the crankcase doesnt get any oil in it . the bearings are lubricated with three grease cups. one on each main bearing cap and one on the end of the crank which lubricates the rod bearing with a grease cup that has a left hand thread on it so you can give it a little squirt now and then with the engine running.there should be an oiler on top of the engine that lubricates the cylinder should be about one drop every six seconds
the breather is only to keep dirt out.. the oil that lubricates the cylinder will drip out of there toy might want to put a can under it MAKE SURE THE CYLIONDER GETS LUBRICATED OR THE PISTON WILL GAULL TO THE CYLINDER GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN BY THE way is it an igniter or spark plug

Jack,
thanks for the info.. the engine uses the ignitor.. I currently don't have the mag, but I have it running on a battery and coil.. I am still trying to figure out how to prime the pump (experimenting..), but I can't figure it out.. I guess I better get a manual soon.. I only ran the engine a few minuites, and noticed that I have a leak in the oiler tube, so I guess I need to get a new one of those..... I have one more question.. I know this is a sleeved engine, so how hard would it be to replace the O-rings that seal the sleeve?? I guess it needs some work, but not as much as I expected..

Take the head off, hand hole cover off. Take bearing cap off rod. Push piston out. A good piece of oak and a good hammer have always taken mine out. New o-rings can be bought from HitNmiss in orwell ohio. They do have a web site. Phone# is (216) 272-5335. Original were leather. Some times a little wd-40 will swell them up again. A little silicon goes along way too. Got 3- 1 1/2, 1- 3hp, 1- 6hp, a verticle 3hp screen cooled famous 1909, a 1 1/2 lb and a 3 to 5 lb. I just love my 6hp. Runs very well.
