I work at Collier Mem. State Park and Logging Museum in Oregon. We have an 1878 Case Steam Engine that, like most of the horse-drawn engines, had the front axle pulled out from underneath it at some time and was field-repaired. We'd like to try and rebuild the front axle, but are having trouble finding out exactly what kind of setup they originally had. Does anyone have photos of this vintage engine, or something close that has the original front axle setup? Would very much appreciate any help you can give us!
We also have an operational Altman-Taylor, a Russell and a Westinghouse (all fully restored) if you'd like to trade photos. Thank-you, Ranger Larry

The Henry Ford museum in, Dearborn Michigan, has a display of probably 100+/- steam engines of all types and from many different manufacturers. You can probably find the information that you need there.

There is A Case steam engine that was owned by a town over in Northeast Indiana that is about that vintage. The engine still exists, but right now I can not remember where or who has it. It was used in some major Case show a few years ago. I would like to know more about your other engines.

Thanks for the info. I'd like to know where that engine is if you can figure it out. What do you want to know about our other engines? The Westinghouse is a Traction Eng. with an upright boiler and one of the first V-Belts...although we had to make our own belt. I believe it's only 10 or 15 hp., but I'd have to check on that. The Aultman-Taylor is about a 25 hp. traction eng, and the Russell is a portable about 10hp. I think. All are fully restored. We have the Case I mentioned and a bigger Case Traction eng. that will never run, I think it rolled off a bluff or something, but it's all there. We also have another Aultman-Taylor that's painted and serves as part of our entrance display and a Port Huron Traction Eng. that we just brought in last fall. It had a pretty rough life too, including running off a road into a canyon. The father of the guy that donated it bought it for $5 and puleed it out with horses. I think he just used it as a power source in it's later years. Will post pics if you're interested and I can figure out how to do it here. thanks again!
