I have a Hale 25FR portable fire pump mounted on a trailer driven by a 2 cyl Wisconsin TJD engine. It belonged to a local VFD and sat out for over a year. I pulled the distributor, cleaned the points and weights, then reassembled it. With fresh gas, it fired right up and ran quite well but when I opened the valve and start building head pressure, the engine stalled and couldn't be restarted without pulling the air filter and juicing with a little gas. After it fires, it will start running again and be fine until I open the water valve. The governor seems to be working to a degree because I can hear it kick in but the engine eventually just dies. The restart problem almost acted like vapor lock but I waited until the engine was cold and it did the same thing. Any suggestions are appreciated...Thanks, Hollis

Did you get your pump working? I got the engine on mine running yesterday, but have not tried to pump water yet because the outlet casting is broken. It seemed to run fine, though I couldn't put a load on it. I did notice that it wouldn't run at slow speeds with the exhaust/primer diverter closed. I have had no luck finding a replacement outlet casting (do you know of any?) so am just going to jb-weld it back together for now and hope it at least holds long enough to check out the rest of the system. Feel free to contact me if you're still having trouble with your 25FR and and we can compare notes and see what's different about yours.

We had a similar pump mounted on the front of a tanker. It had a damper that was mounted on the exhaust stack and the older guys said that it was used to prime the pump using manifold vaccum I think. There may be a connection on your pump that is messing up your intake mixture. Just an idea.

I do have that damper mounted on the exhaust and it is used to get the pump primed. I do not know if it affects the engine.
