Hi All,

I've just inherited 3 stationary engines from my grandfather - a John Deere, an IH McCormick Deering (with original owners manual!), and a Fairbanks Morse. They were all in running condition as of 2 years ago - the JD & IH were fairly recently restored. I really know nothing about these things & I will probably end up selling two of them. The JD was his favorite, so I suspect I'll keep that one. Can anyone tell me anything about them? Approximate value? Pointers on where to look for more information?

Here are some pics:

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Hi Rob, I just noticed the picture link (duh!) and took a quick look. That's definitely a John Deere "E" and most likely a 1 1/2hp. I probably have a spare manual for it lying about, email me if you need one. The IH is, if I'm not mistaken, a throttle governed engine, not a hit and miss.

Rob, for an idea about values see link below. Which JD do you have?

Hi,

I honestly don't know - there's no ID plate on it like there is on the FM & IH. There are some numbers stamped in the casings - perhaps they would tell me?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,
You'll find the John Deere's information on the side plate behind the flywheel on the mag side of the engine. There should be a tag with the serial # and raised letters on the side plate will tell you what HP it is.

Rob, There should be some info on the cover plate directly below the magneto. This is cast into the plate and should be visible with a little cleaning. The engine is most likely a gasoline powered Model "E", and most likely of 1 1/2hp. They were also made in 3 and 6hp versions. And, in kerosene models. Measure the OD of the flywheels and post the measurment. That will tell us which size you have. There are plenty of parts and info still available. Also see link below. Have Fun with it! They are great little engines, quite popular and probably worth $800 to $1200 depending on condition and model.
