Ok I can now crank the welder but not spark. What should I try before tearing the mag apart?

I would say the points need cleaning. After you take the cap off the mag and get it to fire. I seal the cap, after reinstalling it on the mag with clear acrylic paint. After the cp has soaked up as much of the clear as it will I let it dry and then paint the mag with a color paint. I did this on the mag of my Lincoln with a THD Wisconson. It sets in the weather and never draw moisture in the mag.

Some have to be back together to testand some do not. It depends on how the mag is made. I have taken a piece of wire and grounded it to one of the screws that hold the mag cap on and bent it so the wire was near the high tension terminal on the mag. I the n turn over the engine. Note depending on what tpye mag you have this may upset the engines timing. Mags used by Allis-Chalmers had a two to one gear in the cap so removing the cap can upset the timing. It would be best to note the position of the mag., disassemble it and clean the points and reassemble in the same position and then check for fire. If you do not have much experience with mags you should get some professional help.

I will try that but I have a FM X4B16A-1 Mag and I would like to check the coil and make sure it is working before I proceed.

Clean the points and put it back together. If it works you have tested everthing. The only other thing you can not check is if you have a problem with the coil or condenser that will fail from heat. The only way to tell is to get the engine running and see if it stop after a period of time. You are making this way more complicated than it is. If you are unconferrable with working on a mag, get some experianced help.
