John Deere Type E 3HP starts hard gas starved

Just got the engine. It seems like a gas problem. Seems to have good spark and compression. Runs good with choke partially on but is seems like its not sucking gas properly. Sometimes it starts OK and sometimes not. I cleaned out the line from the tank to the carb. Never had a carb apart. Could it be something in the carb or a valve. I have no exhaust pipe on it. Would that have anything to do with it. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

There should be a ball-type check valve at the bottom of your fuel line that extends into the tank. Does yours have one, and is it clean and operating properly?

Also, the brass stem ("jet") in the mixer, where the gas enters the bottom and the needle valve screws into the top has holes across from each other, and the engine will run better if it is installed positioned, I believe, so a line though the holes would be perpendicular to the flow of air through the mixer. Someone may correct me on this, but that's how I remember it.

From time to time original or reproduction operator's manuals show up on ebay.

Can the check ball fall out? I noticed a star shaped piece on the bottom of the fuel line but it didn't seem like it was a check valve. There was a hole that ran straight through. I was able to blow through both ways. If you have a way of explaining what it looks like, Please do, otherwise I'll take the line off again and take a closer look. Thanks for your time Bob.

Kevin,

Here's a couple of links to threads on the Smokstak message board that may help you out.

Do you know if the check valve has a spring in it or if it is just a ball with no spring? I took it apart and there was no check ball in the check valve. The engine still acts the same, I still have to run it with the choke 1/2 on. It doesn't seem to do much if I turn on the fuel control knob (seems to run best about 2 turns out). My 1-1/2HP JD runs best 1/2-3/4 turn out.

A properly functioning check valve is important if you want it to run right. I would contact one of the supplies mentioned in the links in my previous post, and see what they recommend. Shouldn't cost much.

I got a new check valve and soldered a tiny hole in the gas line. It starts and runs perfect now. Thanks for the help Bob.
