I have an old Forklift (Towmotor MHE159) with a Continental FS162-6020 engine with a 6 volt electrical system. How can I tell if this machine is positive or negative ground? DOes it matter?

IF the ignition coil has not been tampered with, how the two small terminals are hooked up will tell the system ground polarity.

The terminals are usually labelled (+) and (-), and if yours are so labelled you're in luck!

Determine which wire is hooked over to the distributor, to the breaker points. (+) to points, system is set up for positive ground. (-) to points, system is set up for negative ground.

Unfortunately, some coils are labelled BATT and DIST, and this makes it confusing, especially if you don't know if it is the original (or correct replacement) coil.

In any case, if the engine has a GENERATOR, it should be polarized before startup. There are 2 basic different schemes to polarize generators, depending on if it's a so-called "A" system. or a "B" system. What brand of generator does it have?

Thanks,
It is now wired coil (-) to points. Though I wonder if it is incorrect since the coil appears to have been replaced recently (new screws mounting it).
The generator is not labeled that I can see. "SG" stamped on body of generator however.
I hooked the battery up to positive ground and engine runs. I switched the battery cables since the way it was hooked up the red cable did not fit well on the neg battery post nor on the engine's starter post (screw lug too small). Using the Red cable on engine ground fit the lug on vehicle ground better also. Black cable fit the engine's starter post better as well, a 5/16" bolt) This leads me to believe it is a positive ground set-up and perhaps whoever replaced the Coil wired it wrong?

Usually the voltage regulators were stamped POS for positive ground set up and NEG for negative. You may want to check that also.
