Just bought a McCormick Deering 1 1/2 horse engine. Serial # is W36160. Need Help on fuel pump, it will not pump. ANY ideas to repair or replace. Also, any one that has a picture how the governor looks. It seem that if the governor is on backwards? I am very new to this, any help how to set the oiling system to the grease caps to the color would be helpful. Thank Rick

Disassemble the pump. The check valve balls could be rusted and can be replaced with the same size from any hardware store such as LOWE'S. The packing around the stem is probably hard. You can also buy packing from a 'good(real)' hardware. Ask for pump or gland packing. It will look like dirty waxed string.

Disassemble the fuel pump, make sure the check
balls are not stuck or missing. The governor
yoke should be facing the flywheel, with the
weights resting between the spokes.

Fuel Pump: The pump was a lapped fit, stem to housing. The housing usually wore more then the stem. Try pumping oil instead of gas, if it works the stem can be plated and the housing re-fit.
If not, you can cut a groove on the stem and install an "O" ring. The "O" ring will need to be replaced yearly. Re-manufactured pumps for the "M" are available from a number of sources which advertise in GEM and other magizines.
Will look at my govenor before any advice on that one.

I have the same McCormick-Deering Engine only my fuel pump is cracked and not repairable. Could someone tell me where I could get a used or remanufactured fuel pump. It is also the "M" series 1 1/2 HP. Made in the 1920's.

Try Starbolt. The email address is starbolt4u@alo.com They will send you a free catalog. It seem to me when I talk to them that they knew someone that would repair them.
