Wisconsin THD Flywheel

I'm trying to get the flywheel off of a Wisconsin THD on an old Lincoln Weldanpower 200. It seems to be a classic Catch 22 - you can't get the flywheel off because the shroud goes behind it, preventing you from being able to push or pull on the flywheel. And, you can't get the shroud off 'til you get the flywheel off.

I'm about to drill and tap some puller holes in the flywheel. Does anyone know of a better way to get that darn flywheel off?

Thanks,

Bob

I went ahead and drilled and tapped three 5/16" holes for a puller. A little pressure from the puller and the flywheel popped loose just fine. I don"t think I messed with the balance too much by drilling three small evenly spaced holes but I guess I"ll find out.

In the meantime I bought a service manual and Wisconsin recommends gripping one of the flywheel fins with your hand and hammering on the end of the crankshaft to break the taper lock. Ridiculous.
