Need Help!!! I have a JD 1-1/2 hp engine serial #367690 (1946 model) that leaks water. It's at the bottom of the water hopper just to the front and rear of the drain plug. I intend to grind out and patch with JB Weld. Is this the best I can do?? Please help!!

Depends upon the type of leak but you might try to seal it with sodium silicate(water glass).

Sir,
Can you tell us more about sodium silicate? I have an engine with a similar problem and I don't want to use JB or make the crack any larger.

Sodium silicate is available at any drug store. Just pour it in with your water. It works good on these old engines. You have to be kind of careful when using it on a radiator cooled engine so as not seal off the radiator. A single application is all it takes.

If you "VEE" the crack out a bit, and get it clean and free of oil and water residue, the JB will work just fine.

Somewhere I can't recall at the moment, on another board, someone waits until to JB gets partially set up, and then takes a sheet of fairly coarse sandpaper and presses it against the still soft JB to imprint a texture that is similar to the original sand-cast texture if the cast iron, making the repair nearly invisible.

Thanks so much Bob. I do feel better about it now. And the sandpaper trick is a good one for you to try.
thanks again
