I’m cleaning out the water hopper on my old engine, and as I run my hand down between the cylinder and the jacket I can feel objects lodged in there. I can also see these things as I look up thru the drain hole. I have been able to free and remove 3 of the 7 that I see. They appear to be star shaped tumbling media. I have given up on getting the other 4 to 5 out. They are lodged to tight. This hopper is cracked and I intend to JB Weld it. Any advice? Is this typical?

The star shaped tumbling media are known in the trade as casting stars. They are used for spacing when casting the engine. Leaving them there won"t hurt a thing, however, if you try removing them you may end up cracking or breaking something.

JB weld should do the trick or you can use epoxy. Or, depending on where it"s cracked and you are not concerned about looks, you can V it out and braze it. Using cast iron brazing rod can be a little tricky. You can use regular brazing rod which is softer and more forgiving and less likely to crack when cooling.
