We have a Wisconsin VH4D on a John Deere 214WS Square baler from the late 1940s. The problem we are having is that when it gets hot out in the field and we have to shut it down due to a baler problem or it dies while idling, it is extremely difficult to start. We have done very little in the way of rebuilding it. The carb is clean and works well. Some mechanics have said it is vapor locking due to the fuel line running right across the top of the engine. We have insulated the line and the problem still exists. This really doesn't make sense since my dad never had the problems before until the last 10 years or so. I probably just need to do a full tear down and refurbishing, but I don't really have the time to take to do it. Once the engine cools it starts fine. It usually runs great also. It wouldn't be bad except it is hand crank and we have spent lots of cranking time just to take a break and let it sit in the field and cool down before resuming baling. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

We had that same problem with a VF4D on a New Holland model 77 baler. Grandad removed the heads, milled .020 from the gasket surfaces. This effectively raised the compression, eliminating the hard hot start situation. BTW, our old Wisconsin has electric start, and is sitting out in my garage, the only thing left of that miserable old baler. Good riddance to the baler, but that engine still runs teriffic! They were tough and hard to beat. Regards..... .P

My combine was the same way. New magneto coil and condensor fixed. Started hot or cold the same.

The problem you have was considered a normal
condition around here. Many of these engines
were left idling over noon lunch for just that
reason. The blame was put on the magneto coils
at the time.

Do you have the manual for the engine? Some Wisconsins had hot start issues due to the intake manifold running too hot. Some manuals tell how to hacksaw cut a slot between the exhaust manifold casting and the intake manifold "hot spot" to improve hot starting in hot climates. Brian

Do you let it idle to cool a bit before shut down? That might help a little.

Also, some Wisconsins have a thermal overheat shutdown switch on one of the heads. If shut it down hot, but not hot enough to have tripped the switch, the resulting rise in temperature of the head at shutdown can trip the switch, preventing starting until the engine cools a bit.
