Neighbor told me he had an engine for me to pick up. Said it was a 7hp B&S. Went to get it and thought I was going to need a fork lift to load it on the pickup! It was military/forestry surplus fire pump engine. The flywheel shroud has the regular B&S logo stamped in the sheet metal. The block and crankcase are solid cast iron the head and oil pan are aluminum, the Briggs tag is gone off the cylinder fin sahield, but it has a military tag on it that says 7.0 hp @2800 rpm. It has a fuel pump and the switching valve to run off a remote tank, and also has the regular tank. it was taken off,put up and sealed up,because it was hard to crank unless they took off air cleaner and poured gas in the air cleaner down tube. Took off the air cleaner tube and the wing nut they must have lost at some point and replaced with a regular hex nut was under the choke plate and keeping it from closing more than 1/4 of the way. After I removed the carb and sprayed the float with WD40 to loosen it up and reassembled it,the entire inside of the carb was shiny new like it has never been used much and the olive drab paint is hardly worn off the rope start pulley. Don't think it has been used much. Got it running with very little doing, cleaned the little bit of gum out of the 3 way gas tank valve, then took out spark plug squirted some oil the cylinder and then hooked an electric motor and belt to it and motored it over for about 3 minutes to coat everything with oil, polished the points and replaced the plug wire and wrapped rope on the pulley and fired it off, ran good for about 5 minutes and then it began to break up. Was ignition problem of course after 12-15 years of storage, guess the coil has just expired duie to old age, after all the date on the tag says Mfgd 1965. Now it runs and cranks excellent on a battery ignition set up, but that might be awkward on a non electric start ,haand crank engine. The question is, where to find a coil to replace the military sealed and water proof metal spark plug set up wire/plug. The engine compares to all the data and pictures of a 23 series when I look it up in the book. It matches with the 9 bolt cylinder head and all the governor and carburetor pictures and ignition points and box all look like the 23 series. It has the coil and magnets under the flywheel, and the point and condenser box on the block down on the carburetor side of engine. Is there any hope of putting electronic ignition like the new stuff has?

A Briggs dealer can fix you up with a new coil assy with will be electronic triggered and will have a normal spark plug wire. If it were mine I would add the B&S electronic convertion to the coil and keep the sheilded spark plug set-up to keep the unit in it's orginal condition.

P.S. Some B&S Model numbers were stamped in the flywheel shroud. Look it over good as they sometimes have paint hiding them.

Hey Kent, where are you? I'm in Spfd/Strafford by day, Battlefield by night. I work for the Case/New Holland Reman electrical division of SRC. Know anybody locally with a little 2hp clinton?

thanks

I am in Pleasant Hope. You want horizontal or vertical crankshaft.

Hi, Gene,

Thanks for your reply on my Wisconsin question. RE: your Briggs, for electronic ignition try Pertronix. They make small modules for many engines, including industrial, and I used one in a 1973 Mercury Cougar and loved it. NAPA store guy the other day was showing me pictures of their "Atom Module", which is an electronic unit to replace points in samll engines, much cheaper than Pertronix.
