Have a john deere type E engine that ran last year and now I cannot get it to start. Can someone tell me all of the settings and tricks to starting one. How to tell if it is getting fuel, if it is getting spark, etc. Thanks in advance. I need it to run tomorrow!

Padd, if the model "E" ran last year the first item you should check on your list is fresh gas, from their i would go to the check valve in the gas tank as it is most likely stuck and won't let any fuel to the carb...to check this put your hand in place of the choke plate and crank the engine... if no fuel is present at the bottom of the choke plate the check valve is probably stuck. to fix this loosen the small nut at the base of the engine and the the large nut. then proceed to loosen the 4 head bolts on the engine and bring them to end of their studs and not off. at that point you should be able to pull the head forward and then take the gas line out only after you have loosened the top nut just below the water jacket. then pull gas line out and unscrew check valve with screen on it and make sure it moves freely up and down in it's hex shaft while shaking the gas line. also take notice and inspect check dart and make sure it can seal in the hex shaft by letting gas in but not out. no ridges should be on this brass 60 degree dart and get the varnish off the inside of the hex if you can.

hope this helps if not then go to the mag. remember this is a low tension mag made by associated and you will have to spin the flywheel pretty fast and take the igniter end of the wire and try and brushing it across the tension spring (the larger spring on the igniter) to view if their is any spark or not...get your face down close to the igniter and test in a dark area if possible and watch out so you are not hit by the flywheel... it helps to have someone else do the cranking.
remember these mags put out .2 volts only and it does not take much spark to make them run.

if you were close here in mn. i would come and help. have about 78 john deeres that all run. and have been collecting since 1968. btw what hp. was this engine.

thanks, Gary r. voigt
