I recently bought an old masport rota-hoe with a Briggs & Stratton 5hp engine - 131232 model (points and condenser). It had been sitting in storage for about 10 years. I cleaned it up, filled with fresh oil, fuel & started engine. It ran for about 10 seconds & stopped. I checked the coil & the spark had become vey weak.
I purchased a second hand coil and fitted it to the unit and it started - this time it ran for about 5 minutes and the same thing happened again - spark had become so weak that it would not fire.
Any ideas on what could cause coils to fail prematurely or is this a common thing??

Sounds to me that the condenser is breaking down causing excess heat in the windings. Replace the points and condenser and you should be O.K.
