Help on Continental Engine

I am working on a Continental engine in a Yale
forklift. I was having an ignition problem which
I found to be the ignition coil. Changed coil to
one I had for something else, and it fixed the
problem. The engine now runs great. The coil
I took off has an internal resistor built in, but the one I put on uses ane external resistor. I
had replaced the old one about a year ago and the
motor has always missed and hesistated on
acceleration. I checked for a resistance wire that powers coil and found it to put full voltage
to coil. There is no external resistor on the
machine. Should I buy an external resistor to
use with this coil or buy another coil with internal resistor. The coil gets pretty hot after
running for 15 minutes, so I know it will fail
in due time. The motor runs so great I am afraid
to change something. How do I know
which coil is the correct one. If I buy an external resistor how do I select one that
matches the coil. Also this engine is a four
cylinder and the model#is F400. I have another
engine that the model#is F163. This is in a
Lincoln welding machine. The engines look
the same, I was wondering what the difference is between these engines. My autoparts supplier can
find the F163 but not the F400, so to buy parts for this I have to use F163. I would appreciate any help or advice on this. There are some very
knowledgable people on these forums, and I have
gotten some good help many times here. Sorry
for such a long post.

Thanks to all.

Larry has done a good job explaining most of it The difference between an F-162 and the F-163 is the 163 has a flanged thrust bearing. The F-162 is still the shell and thrust washer set up on the front main. Head gaskets will not interchange between the 2 engines. The F-400 series consisted of the F-124, F-140 & The F-162 and now the F-163. The difference is mainly bore size. Questions.

The f400 is a casting number and is usually followed by more numbers like 3u 255 etc.Without the additional numbers its hard to say which engine it is other than to say its a 4 cylinder F series. The F163 is a newer version of the F162 most parts will interchange. The massy board has more experts on thease engines.Buying a coil with the internal restier is the best way to be sure you have a good match. The points and condenser will last much longer too.
