Rockford Clutch

I am trying to remove a Rockford PTO clutch from a Wisconsin VG4D engine. I have it torn down to the plate behind the clutch disc - what would be the flywheel on a car. How does this plate come off? There are two 3/8" threaded holes in the plate. I have attached a puller and the plate will not budge. I can not see or feel any key or locking mechanism. I assume it is a splined shaft. Any ideas?

Sounds like what you are calling a plate is the drive hub. On the end of the crankshaft is a 7/16 inch screw that holds the hub retainer. I would remove that and the drive hub should come off.

I have a problem with a rockford clutch hooked up on a detroit 3-53 diesel, is that the pump on it keeps moving even when the pump is out, i.e. the clutch is always in the "in position"

Thanks for the help. I found the allen head screw and removed it. I re-attached the puller and it still won't budge. Tomorrow I will try some heat.

I haven't found any information on the web for this particular model of clutch. The plate says it is a model PTA-5871. Anybody heard of it?

The Rockford clutch is an obsolete style. And there are only two parts available through normal sources - the clutch disc and the Split collar for the Release bearing.

The drive hub is a light press fit on a straight shaft; uses a woodruff key. It should pull off with moderate effort (after removal of the retaining screw), but it is probably rusted on. A little heat will help.

The manual I have and the picture shows a PTA-5822 Rockford clutch. If my scanner worked I would send you a picture from the manual. I removed the same clutch from an old VP4 (1947 vintage) but can't remember how I did it. That was probably 25 years ago or more. If you would like I could zerox the pages and send them to you. Looking at the book again I can see nothing that would keep that drive hub on the crankshaft after that screw was removed. I hope I did not overlook something.

Will a model PTA 5822 Rockford clutch fit and work on a VE4 Wisconsin engine? Thanks

I have some Wisconsin manuals, but unfortunately not at hand. Rockford is still in business, perhaps they could fax an instruction sheet to you, and Wisconsin manuals are often found on ebay.

I will look for my manuals, unfortunately that will have to wait until Wednesday. Perhaps someone will post a simple answer before then!
