Yes, it is a two cycle. The knob on top of the angled pipe is the combination throttle/choke, it controls the air supply into the "carburetor". Turn the knob all the way clockwise at first, that shuts off the air and "chokes" it. After a few kicks with the starter, open the knob up 1/4 turn or so and continue to kick the starter until it starts. AFter it is running, fine tune the knob for an RPM and power peak. To shut it off, you open the knob counter-clockwise several turns until the mixture is so lean it won"t run any more. Good luck, post back if you have any more questions. Brian

I generally use the little cans of Lawn-Boy oil, that mix up with two gallons of gas, not sure if that is 32:1 or 48:1, I doubt if it"s real critical. Most of the old engines run a little heavier on oil than the newer ones.

My dad grew up on a farm where they had one of these, he used to tell a lot of good stories. One was that in the winter time they would run the washing machine and engine inside, and stick the exhaust hose in a five gallon bucket of water. The carbon monoxide and dioxide dissolves in the water, supposedly. I've tried it and it works pretty well (at least it kills the smell), but since it is a two cycle engine, the water gets oily quick. (Disclaimer: I'm not recommending you try this!) He also had a friend whose dad mounted their 2 cylinder maytag engine on a bicycle after they got high-line power and didn't need the gas engine anymore. Said the bike would go pretty fast with him on it. It would be interesting to try. Brian
