I have a SA-200 welder with F-163 Continental
engine. The problem I have is when it goes to
low idle it pops and misses through exhaust. Runs
perfect at high idle, starts good, welds with
plenty of power accelerates good. I have put
in new plugs that are properly gapped to owners
manual specs. I have put on new plug wires, mag
was gone through some time back, but machine
has seen little use. I checked fuel tank its
clean, sediment bowl checked and cleaned, changed fuel filter. Found out if I pull out choke
slightly it stops missing, so I took out carb
and there was small trash in bowl. Soaked carb
overnight and sprayed out jets with B-12. Put in
new kit, adjusted and still miss at low
idle. Pull out choke slightly miss clears up. Push in it misses again. This does"nt
affect using machine just irritates me.
Also checked compression and pressure is even
across cylinders an up to specs. Timing has not been checked, but miss just started recently.
Any comments or suggestions appreciated. Sorry
for long post. Trying to get out info.

Thanks to all.

MY MACHINE DID THIS AND I ASKED A MECHAINC ABOUT IT HE SAID THEY ALL DO IT DUE TO THE UPDRAFT CARBURATOR I SET THE IDLE AT THE CARB A LIL HIGHER AND THE POPPING WENT AWAY IT TRIED REDUCING THE FUEL TO THE CARB CHANGING PLUGS ETC. NONE OF IT WORKED SO 1 DAY I SET THE IDLE AT THE CARB A LIL HIGHE RAND IT DISAPPEARED GOOD LUCK

sounds like a vacum leak (spray all conections with wd-40) ,manifold to block, carb to manifold ,and so forth Bill

Russel, I would almost bet it's a slightly clogged low speed jet in the carb. The clue is when it runs good with a little choke. I can't tell you how many times I've had similar problems. I would think the carb was clean but it still ran terrible. Once you find the correct jet and really clean it I think you'll have it running good. You have to actually follow the gasoline flow and see which jet it is for slow speed. Some times I've had to remove the steel balls used to plug passage ways to be able to get it clean. Good luck!

Have you checked the valve adjustments?
