I recently had the valves set on my engine and I can't get it started. The timing is right on the spark is strong but even with a shot of instant start it wouldn't fire. The last thing I did was to get a lighter intake vaulve spring for it didn't seem to be opening up to allow fuel to acess the cylinder chamber. It fired once but I haven't been able to get it going again. The compression seems good at least as good as the last time it ran which was last week at a engine meet. The trouble I was having then was keeping it running. It would run for a good 10 minutes and quit. Any sugestions on what the problem might be?

Are you sure you aren't flooding it? I had a similar running problem with my 2hp Taylor Vacuum engine. These engines can be VERY picky when it comes to mixer needle settings. I'd take the plug out and lay it on top of the water hopper to make sure it's getting spark by spinning the flywheels good and fast. If it is, i'd wire brush the plug and put it back in and try to start without choking it and possibly with the fuel turned off to help blow a lot of excess fuel out. Open the needle one full turn and (no choke) spray a quick whiff of starting fluid in there and see what it'll do. Even some engines with low compression will run good with no load. Another thing to look for is the check valve. If it's got crud in it and isn't seating, the fuel will leak back down and the engine will starve for fuel if it's a no-fuel problem.
