I have a good friend that has a 471 power unit to run his saw mill and we think the head gasket is leaking. It never runs hot by the temp gauge but when under a load for a few min it will start to push water out the over flow. And build pressure (5 lbs. or so) in the radiator along with lots of foam in the water.Water flow is very good and system holds pressure with no leaks. when running there is a constant bubbling of air so would lead me to think compression is leaking by the head gasket. No water is getting in the oil and engine runs good, any tips would be appreciated.
Looking at the engine it has housing on the front and rear of the engine that covers the ends of the head and I think they actually do dot seal to the head but do have a few bolts that bolt to the head. So my thinking is to remove the front and rear bolts that go through the housing at the head and the head would come off in a normal fashion. Correct me if I'm I am thinking wrong ’bout this. BTW monitoring the exhaust manifold with a temp gun the front cyl. runs 145 deg. and back 3 run 195 deg. ext. temp. the engine temp runs around 120 to 130 and no real temp difference in the outlet of the radiator and I'm am sure the rad is not plugged up and fan has good air flow although the fan belt could be tighter. I even went as far as to block the air flow up in front of the radiator to restrict air flow so he would not have to work the saw mill to load up the engine. However it made no difference in the engine temp. I had to load the engine to get it to push water out the over flow tube. Water level is not too high in the rad tank. I believe at the time of the diagnosis the thermostat was removed.

A 195F thermostat has to be in there to keep the engine running efficient and lasts much longer. Those engine stack temps? Are they in F or C? Is that meter off by a factor of ten? One cylinder is lazy there too. Those Detroit's don't use a head gasket per say. There is a fire ring at the top of each sleeve which gets squashed by the head onto the sleeve top. Each sleeve has to protrude within a couple of thou of each other of she won't seal. She's either leaking there or cracked a head. Some "O" rings are supposed to seal the coolant between the block and head. A flat "rubber" gasket runs around the outer edges of the block top keep most of the oil in the engine. If you don't know how to set those injectors and rack you may hear a vvvVVVVVrrrrrRRRRRooooOOOOOmmmmMMMM..... ..... ...BANG. When in there, sleeve kits are cheap so install a "N" set and "N" injectors along with all new springs. New updated blower seals too.
