I was wondering if anyone could help me I aqiired a engine and what looks like a transmission attached to it. I was looking for any information I could on it. or what it was used for. I would like to fix it up and paint it if it would be worth doing or I don't know what I would use it for. Thank You

The LUC engine was built by John Deere in the 40's and into the 1950's. They were approx 14 hp. The L stands for the type of engine, the U means power unit, and the C meant combine. It was mostly found on the 12-A combine, and maybe a very few of the early 25 series combine. It should be equipped with a manually operated toggle action clutch assembly that was operated by pulling a rope from the tractor seat and a step down gearing that had a 2 piece pulley on the output shaft. Hand cranked, although it usually had a place to mount a starter if you added a flywheel ring gear too. It would also fit in the John Dere LA series tractor. Tough good running very dependable little engine and when fitted with the Wico series XH magneto instead of the C series Wico, it was a good easy cranker. Thousands of them were harvesting grain in the 40's,50's and 60's all over America on small farms. Often they ran from the time the dew dried off the grain till well after dark with only stops for gasoline and maybe an oil check and lunch for the operator.
