I will soon be ready to try and start my first stationary engine , which is a Fairbanks Morse Model Z dish pan engine. I do not yet have an ignition system for it. I have seen where "buzz boxes" etc have been used for these engines. I am a newbe to these engines and my question is can I use a 12 volt car coil, 12 volt battery, and a condensor to rig up an ignition for this engine? Eventually, I want to get a buzz box for it. Thanks.

Does the engine have a spark plug, or an ignitor?

If it has a spark plug, it would have used a buzz coil.

You CAN use an automotive coil and condenser. However, the ignition timing will be LATE, unless you make some changes there.

Buzz coils spark when the ignition contacts CLOSE, and a Kettering ignition system sparks when the points OPEN. So the timing will be significantly LATER using an automotive coil.

There are quite a few sources for BUZZ COILS, if you search the 'net a bit, and there are usually some on ebay.

Or, nake your own BOZZ COIL. Check out the link below:
